Sow Project student Parres Showers’ journey to building a culinary career
For Parres Showers, the path to the kitchen didn’t start with certainty – it started with persistence.
Born and raised in Memphis, she knew that cooking was more than an interest; like many chefs, it was a calling early on. But turning that passion into a career proved harder than expected.
“Prior to joining The Sow Project, I was searching for an affordable culinary school. However, I soon realized that options were limited. Every culinary school I was accepted to was either too far away or too expensive.” Her barrier wasn’t talent or drive – it was access. That’s where timing, determination, and opportunity intersected.
“I was introduced to The Sow Project through my high school teacher. I decided to apply because becoming a chef is my dream profession. I am passionate about cooking, and I was on the verge of giving up on finding an affordable school until I discovered The Sow Project,” re called. Although I heard about it on the last day of sign-ups, I made it my top priority to try to get into the project.” That decision changed everything.
Inside The Sow Project kitchen, Parres quickly discovered that real-world experience comes with real surprises.
“In the kitchen, I've acquired a significant amount of knowledge. But this far, I'd say learning how to butcher a pig has surprised me the most. Seeing where all the different parts of the meat come from and how to perfectly cut around the bone has been eye-opening.”
Hands-on learning like this is central to The Sow Project’s model. Students aren’t just watching or studying technique – they’re practicing it. The result is confidence built through competence.
But the most meaningful changes haven’t only happened at the cutting board.
“The Sow Project has helped me grow outside the kitchen by introducing me to diverse individuals and teaching me how to work with the time and budget I have.”
For Parres, that growth also meant learning how to believe in herself as a professional. “I was always hesitant to promote myself due to my age, but The Sow Project has connected me with other chefs, which has helped me become more confident.” That shift from hesitation to self-assurance is exactly what The Sow Project aims to cultivate. Skills matter, but so does knowing your worth.
Parres’ goals are ambitious, clear, and rooted in experience. “Upon completing the program, I plan to work as a private or personal chef. My ultimate goal is to own my own food truck and possibly a restaurant in the future.” Her vision is shaped by hard work, opportunity, and the belief that a career in food is both possible and sustainable.
Parres’ story is one of many unfolding inside The Sow Project kitchen. It’s proof that when talent meets access, mentorship, and real opportunity, the future opens up.
